The project is the brainchild of Apron, a community initiative run by Lis Long, who approached Adur District Council with the idea.

She said she was inspired by the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership and the Moulsecoomb Forest Garden.

And after a successful crowdfunder, and a lot of hard work, Lis said she was thrilled to be opening the garden this Saturday.

“We worked through the winter and have been overwhelmed by the support of the community, Adur & Worthing Councils, park sarden Keith Walder and Green Tides,” she added.

“We can’t wait to start welcoming volunteers on site, everyone who signed up has been so patient as we navigate through doing this safely and in line with government guidelines.”

The aim of the garden is to create accessible volunteering and learning opportunities and to work with local organisations to address the growing issue of food poverty in the area.

Seasonal events and workshops will be held throughout the year, as well as educational sessions on sustainability, environment, and biodiversity and local heritage craft workshops.

Lis said: “Building the garden has been a real labour of love. It was born out of lockdown and at such a challenging time, we really want the community to enjoy the garden and help it grow into the future.”
