Barry Bastable said he and the society’s new committee were positive about the future of the bonfire in the town.

Putting out a plea for volunteers to help the event run on October 30, and a call for companies to act as sponsors, he said the society had made changes this year but hoped the event would be as big as ever.

He aded: “The past year has presented all of us with many challenges. The committee and I recognise the happiness that our event can bring is more important now than ever.

“Over the years we have raised many thousands of pounds for many local charities and brought joy to our community. Therefore, with this in mind, I would personally like to put out a request for volunteers for all of the various roles throughout the year which are necessary for our event, so that we may raise money and hopefully be able to beat the record.”

They are looking for walking groups, bands, floats or other bonfire societies to enter the procession, as well as people to run fundraising events in the lead-up the the big night.

They also need people to run stalls, assist through the year making torches, dipping torches before the event, assistance with building and guarding the bonfire and marshalling the event.
