Sussex Police had assessed the scene and was in discussion with West Sussex County Council which owns the land, over how to proceed.

A spokesman for the council said the group had been served with eviction notices and a court hearing was scheduled for tomorrow (April 28).

But the convoy left the land of their own volition this afternoon, the spokesman confirmed.

Officers from Worthing Borough Council are now on the scene conducting a clean-up operation.

Pictures from the scene show debris has been left behind, including a large number of concrete slabs and gas cylinders.

The council has been approached for information on how long the clean-up is expected to take and cost.
