VOLUNTEER COLUMN: Get involved and make a difference in the community

There are lots of volunteering opportunities across the area.

Safe in Sussex (Worthing Women’s Aid) provides refuge accommodation for women and their children fleeing domestic abuse. They are seeking an enthusiastic volunteer fundraiser to organise community fundraising events, working alongside the fundraising and marketing manager or independently.

Worthing Churches Homeless Projects provides a range of services for adults who are homeless and insecurely housed, which includes a day centre providing crisis support, accommodation projects, a breakfast club, an outreach café, homelessness prevention, resettlement and various activities that empower individuals in their recovery journey out of homelessness. This is an opportunity to join the private rented sector access workers as a volunteer assisting with all general aspects of client support. No previous experience is necessary, although the role will ideally suit somebody looking to go into housing charity work or further their housing knowledge and experience.

Outreach 3Way is a Sussex based learning disabilities charity which supports people with learning disabilities in all areas of daily life. They are looking for a sports and leisure volunteer who will be to help the team leader in ensuring the safety and enjoyment of the sports or leisure activities that the group is undertaking. Volunteers need to have a sense of fun and be reasonably active (no sports qualifications needed) and you can volunteer for just one session a week or more if you have the time.

Contact the Elderly is a national charity whose aim is to relieve the loneliness and isolation felt by elderly people living alone. More volunteer drivers are needed to collect up to three elderly people from their homes and take them to the host’s house for tea at 3pm, and return them home at 5pm. You will need a full driving licence and use of a car, and patience and compassion for elderly people.
