ST BARNABAS: Service aims to help patients with end-stage heart failure

In addition to our new renal, liver and dementia specialist nurses, we have now recruited an advanced heart failure nurse specialist.

Michaela Wheatley will work closely with GPs and the cardiology team at Worthing Hospital to ensure the service supports the people who need it the most.

Many patients with advanced heart failure have very specific needs, and often the specialist support required is not available to them.

In her role, Michaela will offer specialist palliative care to patients suffering with long-term complex symptoms and worries associated with heart failure.

The people she will be supporting are those on maximum heart failure treatment who are continuing to deteriorate.

The overall aim of the service is to meet the specific and varied needs of patients living with end-stage heart failure.

Up until now specific support for this group of people has been limited and this service is geared towards addressing this need.

We would like to continue to stress that all of these new services are being developed alongside our existing services, and we are certainly not turning our back on cancer patients.
