We need our own A27 plan

I want to support N Kerridge's letter asking that the town does not allow the Highways Authority to simply upgrade the A27 on its current route.

I would like to suggest that all of us living in the urban area stretching from Lancing through Worthing and Goring as far as Rustington should be pro-active in putting together a working party from among ourselves to decide what improved road structure we think we need.

We can then take our agreed wishes to the Highway Authority and ask them to cost it. At that stage we as locals can agitate with central government to allow the Highways Authority the funding for what we know we want.

It may take time but at least we will get the improvement for our traffic flow and not just for long distance travellers going say from Arundel to Brighton.

Anyone living in the area of Worthing will know that many residents will often journey from, say, Angmering, Goring and Ferring to Lyons Farm, Lancing or Shoreham, and vice vera. To me these are local but at the same time they are also ‘through traffic’.

Such people would never dream of driving down Long Furlong and through Steyning as some of the people writing to this paper have vigorously suggested.

And yet I believe a lot of our ‘through traffic’ is in fact local traffic going to and from work along the coastal strip.

The challenge must be for us ‘Worthing area’ people to come up with a route we ourselves want to see built, a route that reduces the flow along Poulters Lane, at Offington Corner, at the Gove Lodge roundabout and at the Lyons Farm traffic lights.

So can I suggest please that our two MPs persuade the local working party (which already partly exists) to get together to make plans for what Worthing needs before the Highways Authority bring forward their Ideas. It would be good if an effort was made to specially involve the Salvington and Offington residents associations (and Charmandean’s if one is formed) because any planned improvements will most affect their residents.

Lancing could of course be included need be.
