Herald article brought back fond memories

I was extremely interested to read the article and see the accompanying photographs as they brought back memories of my childhood.

My father was Stanley William Winton, the younger brother of Geoffrey (included in the photographs), Hubert and Jessica, and I recall meeting my great-uncle, Stanley Howard Winton, and Auntie Gerry when I was very young. Great-uncle Stan was a keen, though somewhat disillusioned supporter of The Seagulls (they were going through a tricky period in their career) and I remember standing on the terrace of the Goldstone Ground, with him and my uncles on a few occasions.

He had a brother, Ralph, who emigrated to Canada and started a family out there, some of whom moved to Florida, I believe. There was talk of a “cousin Beth” and she lived in Florida, I think. Ralph came back to the UK on a visit and we (ie my father, Stanley, mother, Doris, and Vivien, my sister and myself) went to Henley to meet Ralph with my great-uncle, on his boat.

My father used to get his car serviced by the garage in the Surrey Docks timber haulage company. A Saturday morning drive from Surrey where we lived, dropping the car off at the yard and then tube train to the city, where I looked forward to making a visit to Gamage’s toy shop. I wasn’t always lucky and sometimes had to be content with sight-seeing at St Paul’s Cathedral.

I would very much like to read other articles about the family alluded to by Mr Bateman. I know that my grandfather was a keen photographer and took photos of sights in Shoreham. Some time ago, I had some glass-slides, and negatives on glass-plate, which I had developed into prints, showing boats in Shoreham harbour and a dancing bear in the High Street when the circus came to town. Unfortunately, I cannot trace the slides and negatives now and think that I may have donated them some years ago to the Marlipins Museum.

I am intrigued by his reference to the Winton and Jon Spence collection of photographs. I know that my father’s cousin, June Sterling, of Shoreham Beach, had a scrap-book of family memories, mainly amateur dramatics, of which my Aunt Jessie was very fond, but I believe these records may have been lost when she passed away a few years ago.
