Shirts donated by Sainsbury’s Rustington have caused huge excitement in a village in Malawi.
The store gave a number of shirts and other Sport Relief items to Rustington-based charity Links International, organised with the help of staff member Mark Yates.
Mark’s mother, Lesley Yates, was part of a team from Links International who went on a recent trip to Gunde, a village in central Malawi.
Andy Read, chief executive, said: “We work in a number of developing nations working alongside local, indigenous agencies who are reaching out to their own communities – bringing development and transformation.
“On our trips most team members are volunteers. Through Mark, and the generosity of Sainsbury’s, we were able to take a number of shirts and other items from the Sport Relief stock to distribute in the village.
“There was huge excitement. Some of the people who received them were from groups learning tailoring and carpentry skill, in order to set them up as co-operative businesses.
“The individuals concerned are all recovering alcoholics who previously had very little hope for their future and were also causing many problems in the village.”
Nick Stanley, PR ambassador at Sainsbury’s Rustington, said the store had been happy to make the donation and it was inspiring to hear the response it received thanks to the work done by Links International.
The volunteers’ trips are never about giving money. Instead, they train people to help themselves and sometimes equip them with the resources to make the most of their training.
The charity partners with respected organisations overseas in order to build long-lasting relationships and bring about permanent change.
Althought healthcare and poverty continue to bring hardship, the multi-pronged approach gives the community a lift.
