Two of the area’s MPs have welcomed the ‘outstanding’ rating awarded to Worthing Hospital and the NHS trust that runs it.
Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is now one of only three acute trusts nationally to be given the top rating.
It runs Worthing Hospital and St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, which were also ranked ‘outstanding’, as well as the smaller Southlands Hospital, in Shoreham, which was rated ‘good’ overall – the second highest rank.

Sir Peter Bottomley, MP for Worthing West, and Tim Loughton, MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, have jointly written to trust chief executive Marianne Griffiths to congratulate her and the trust’s staff on the ‘fantastic news’.
The MPs said: “This is a tremendous achievement and one that everyone who knows our local hospitals will agree is richly deserved. It is all the more remarkable given that only three hospital trusts across England have been awarded this top accolade.
“It is entirely fitting that the success story that is the Western Sussex Hospitals trust, that we have all known about locally for some time, can now be appreciated on a national level. Above all, it is a huge vindication for all of the staff and members of the local community who came together not many years ago as part of the KWASH campaign to save Worthing and St Richard’s as major hospitals. Thank goodness we succeeded.”
