A man has been told he faces prison if he does not pay almost £4,000 of owed council tax.

Arun District Council have been trying to secure payment from Barnaby Macey of Littlehampton since 2005, for arrears at previous addresses.

The outstanding amount had risen to £3961.83. The debt accrued relates to non-payment during 2005/2006 with the bulk of debt accruing between 2009 and 2012.

On March 6, at Worthing County Court, magistrates found in the council’s favour and sentenced Mr Macey to 30 days in prison, to be suspended as long as £100 is paid per month until the total sum is repaid in full.

Councillor Dudley Wensley said: “Arun District Council takes non-payment of council tax very seriously as this has an adverse effect on all residents of the district.”
