The number of people seeking work in Worthing and Littlehampton is down by around 20 per cent on last year.
Government figures released this week show the number of people currently claiming Jobseekers Allowance in Worthing is 978, down 18.8 per cent on this time last year.
Littlehampton there are currently 360 claimants, a 20 per cent drop from 12 months ago.
“It’s great news for both Littlehampton and Worthing,” said Karen Brooks, the Department of Work and Pensions relationship manager for West Sussex.
“There’s a lot of work in Worthing at the moment and there’s also a lot of building going on, we’ve had a lot of vacancies.”
She added that there are more than 1000 vacancies in the Worthing area alone currently being advertised on the Job Centre’s website.
Development in the Littlehampton area has also seen a rise in jobs available, with many in the construction industry.
The number of people claiming JSA across West Sussex is currently 4,020, down from the 4,980 this time last year.
JSA figures in Chichester are down 21.8 per cent, with Bognor down 19.8 per cent, Crawley down 13.1, and Horsham saw a drop of around 18 per cent.
The hugely positive Sussex figures accord with a growing national picture of increasing employment.
The UK employment rate is currently a record high 74.1 per cent, with 360,000 more people now in work than this time last year, according to government figures.
The proportion of young people who are in work or full-time education is also nearly the highest it’s ever been, at 85.6 per cent.
The number of people in the UK claiming benefits is also down by 71,500 on the year.
Karen added: “The Job Centre runs a large number of careers events all over the area.
“We’re not just here for people claiming benefits, but people who are considering changing their careers can also come to us and talk to specialist employers.”
