Ensemble Reza at the Festival of Chichester

On Saturday, June 17 at 1pm he will offer the Solo Bach Cello Suites 1 and 5 in St John’s Chapel, St John’s Street, Chichester (tickets £10; students and children £5).Six hours later at 7pm, he is back in the same venue with his Ensemble Reza to offer Jewels of Summer, a programme comprising Mozart – Divertimento in D major; Haydn – Emperor Quartet, Op 76, No 3; and Korngold – String Sextet (www.ensemblereza.com; tickets £15; students and children £3).And all this despite a shoulder injury (a torn ligament) which kept him away from his instrument for a month over December/January – the result of playing, also the result of lifting children and everyday life: “I am trying to treat it by taking time and looking after it. “I am not looking for an operation at the moment. That can limit you more in the long term. But the actual stress is not the concert itself. It is more the preparation that can cause the physical damage. But with this, I am trying to approach it all more mentally than physically, just trying to keep going.”It helps, of course, that he will be kicking off the day with his beloved Bach.“Bach’s music is so cathartic. As a cellist, I grew up hearing Bach every day, and as a musician, I think everything you play comes back to Bach. He is like the bread and butter of what we do. Whether you are playing Rachmaninov or Dvorak or orchestral works, you always come back to Bach.“I think, first of all, it is pure music. However complicated it might seem when you are trying to rehearse it and understand it, trying to find a way of performing it, you find that pureness and simplicity. That’s the amazing thing, you start as a young child performing it and years later you are still looking for and finding different things in it.“As a child, you just enjoy the simple beauty of it. “You don’t have to over-analyse it. But you spend time as you get older thinking about it in different ways, and so as you start to analyse it, it changes according to what is going on in your life.“Sometimes a lot is happening in your life, and you feel your head is full of mess and chaos, and you come to Bach looking to calm down. Other times, your mind is clear and you come to Bach looking for symmetry and looking for the genius of it. Wherever you are in your life, there is always so much to find in Bach.”As for the evening concert, Pavlos reunites with his colleagues from Ensemble Reza, a group of musicians who are mostly based around Haywards Heath. “We are all musicians that have played with orchestras all over the place, and we all met through different groups and we all have families, and it was just a chance to play with people you love near the people you love, without having to travel across London, without having to travel for three hours to get to rehearsals. “We come along, we bring food and drink and we all enjoy rehearsing together and then ten minutes later we are back with our families again.”Tickets are available from Chichester Box Office, The Novium, Tower Street, Chichester, PO19 1QH; phone 01243 816525 or 775888; website http://www.thenovium.org/boxoffice ;email [email protected].
