WORTHING Football Club progressed past Corinthian-Casuals 3-1 on Saturday (October 4) to reach the FA Trophy first-qualifying round.
There they will entertain fellow Ryman League Division 1 South side Merstham on October 18.
Rebels started brightly and Chris O'Flaherty had already seen a free kick hit the bar before Worthing took a fifth-minute lead. Mickey Demetriou took advan
tage of a defensive mix-up and fired home from 12 yards.
Casuals first opening came on 16 minutes but Matt Smith shot over from 15 yards.
Jamie Brotherton and Karl Akehurst, twice, fired openings off-target, while Joe Funicallo also shot wide as the first half finished with Worthing leading 1-0.
Three minutes into the second period, Demetriou raced onto Andy Alexander's through ball to double Rebels' lead.
That was the way things stayed until Casuals were awarded a soft-looking penalty with 11 minutes left. Joe Nwoko went down under a challenge from Rebels keeper Alan Mansfield and Dan Jackson scored from the spot.
But Worthing made sure of their place in the next round with a minute to go when Enzo Benn bundled home a cross at the back post and ensured Rebels took home the £2,000 prize money.
