The event, supported by Worthing Borough Council and Continental Landscapes, draws together qualifiers from 35 counties across England – with approximately 1,000 competitors taking to the greens during the fortnight and thousands more using the town's restaurants, bars and hotels.

Once again, many of the top names in men's bowls will be competing, including current internationals Ian Bond, Simon Skelton and John Ottaway.

And Andrew Squire, the 2007 Champion, will also be returning to Beach House Park to defend the title he won 12 months ago, as will the Carlisle Subscription four skipped by Stuart Airey.

Tony Allcock MBE, chief executive of Bowls England at Lyndhurst Road, and former National and World champion, said: "The Men's National Championships are one of the highlights of the summer season, both for players and spectators.

"The finals have been held in Worthing since 1974, but these will be the first to be held under the 'Bowls England' banner.

"We are looking forward to a fortnight of top-class bowling, and would encourage bowlers and non-bowlers to come down and see some of the country's best players in action."

Worthing Borough Council cabinet member for Clean and Green Environment, Bryan Turner, added: "We are very proud to be hosting the first-ever Bowls England Men's National Championships at Beach House Park.

"For many residents the nationals are a highlight of the year and we look forward to seeing some old friends and making new ones during the Championships."

Entry to the Championships is just £3.50 per day, with a special rate of £7 for three days and free entry for Under 16s. Refreshments are available on site.
