GORDON Brooks has branded himself a "one-gear, no brain" after deciding to cycle on a singlespeed bike from Edinburgh to Worthing.
Gordon, 20, from High Salvington, has decided to take on the challenge in aid of Chestnut Tree House children's hospice, near Arundel.

Normally seen performing stunts on his BMX in Homefield Park, Worthing, Gordon has chosen to attempt the 500-mile ride on a mountain bike with no gears "just to make it extra hard".

He said: "I'm really excited about the ride.

"It was an idea I came up with ages ago.

"I just booked a one-way plane ticket to Scotland there and then and got some friends to sponsor me and that was that really."

Gordon will leave his home in Southwold Close and fly from Gatwick to Edinburgh on Saturday, May 24. He plans to start his ride on the same day.

He said: "The journey will be approximately 500 miles – add to this the 100 or so miles of detours as I get lost and I will be covering near to 600 miles.

"I hope to complete it in six to seven days, coming home two days before my 21st birthday."

Gordon hopes the bike ride will raise around £1,000 for the hospice.

"Chestnut Tree House is a charity I think is great," said Gordon.

"It's local, hands on and they currently only have half the beds in use due to lack of funds.

"I visited the hospice a week before it opened a few years ago and the place just really touched me."
