AN open day is being held at Broadwater Cemetery in response to the vandalism of five war graves there earlier this year.
The headstones at the South Farm Road cemetery, belonging to soldiers who lost their lives fighting for their country, were destroyed by mindless vandals in January.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) is paying for them to be replaced and is supporting the open day, which is on Wednesday between 10am and 4pm.

At noon, the headstones will be rededicated by Reverend David Farrant, from Worthing's Combined Ex-Services Association.

On the day, the CWGC will have a computer helping people to track down any lost military relatives.

There will also be tours of the Victorian Cemetery where visitors can view the burial place of Mary Hughes, the inspiration for the poem Mary had a little Lamb.

It is hoped there will be enough support at the event to set up a Friends of Broadwater Cemetery group.

Former mayor major Tom Wye, who served in the Royal Engineers, said: "I hope the residents of Worthing will come and witness the fantastic work carried out by the CWGC in ensuring our war graves are not neglected."

Further tours are planned for August 9 and September 6.
