Have your say

Distinguished cartoonist Mike Payne is offering to let you in on the secret of his 14 C’s.

Well, actually 14 C’s, two I’s, two zeros and two dots.

Put them all together – in the right way – and your cartoon will live and breathe.

You can see exactly how on our website where Mike explains the technique. But you can also enter his world at Mike’s one-day exhibition coming up at Chichester’s Art For All art gallery next to Brasserie Blanc in The Square, Eastgate on Saturday, December 6.

Starting at around 9.30am and running through to 5pm, the event – which will be in aid of St Wilfrid’s hospice – will feature three sessions of cartoon instruction, the first at 10am, the second at midday, the third at 3pm.

“People will be able to look around and see the artworks, and they will also learn how to create cartoons. During the day, all the stuff that I draw live they will be able to buy, with all the proceeds going to St Wilfrid’s hospice.”

Mike is hoping the day will convince people that when it comes to cartoons, anyone can do it. It’s all a question of finding what’s right for you, an art which links with your soul.

The day will also be a chance to make the acquaintance of Mike’s latest cartoon creation, the lovable little girl known as Little Else – the newest chapter in a glittering career which has seen Mike establish himself as the creator of ranges and concepts of hugely-successful characters and licensed merchandise known throughout the world.

After 26 years in the civil service, Mike broke free and is now regarded as one of the UK’s leading experts in the world of commercial humour, greeting card design, books and gift concept development.

Mike was asked to create a bear with a great depth of feeling for the then newly-formed company Carte Blanche in 1987; working under his pen name of Miranda, Mike created a phenomenon.

Mike’s Tatty Teddy character for the Me to You concept (the charcoal bear with the blue nose), together with other unique creations, has won numerous awards in the USA, Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK.
