Politicians, who needs them? You would have thought that Margaret Hodge, getting rich as the minister responsible for tourism, would be doing all she could to promote British hotels, particularly during the current financial ills.
Not a bit of it! Instead, she told Holiday Which? magazine she thought British hotels were over-priced and of "worrying quality".
It's no wonder British hotels are highly priced, they pay one of the highest rates of VAT in Europe – more than thr
ee times the level in France.
It's all we need – Labour ministers after the headlines at the expense of enterprise in Britain and at the same time stoking up the highest taxes on us.
A room for two days in a Campanile near Amiens last month, with two continental breakfasts and two evening meals cost us 172 euros (£135).
Heaven knows what a similar weekend break would have cost in the UK.
