Second half efforts from Rob Hutchings and Kieron Playle-Howard helped Wick to a 2-0 victory at league below Southern Combination League Division 1 Common in their second-round qualifying encounter.

Hutchings saw a first half penalty saved as extra gloss could have been added, while Wick were forced to see out the final 15 minutes a man light after Jack Bingham picked up two yellow cards on his debut.

Wick coach Wesley Hallett was pleased to see his side progress and book a first-round date with fellow Premier Division side Haywards Heath.

He said: “We didn’t know too much about Little Common going into it but we had seen they have made a decent start to the season.

“The pitch was quite tricky to play on but we adapted well and got a good victory.

“It’s been a tough week or so after Jon Tucker stepped down but this was a good win.

“We’ve got Haywards Heath at home in the next round, it’s a team from our league, they have a lot of quality but we’ll give it a go.”

Wick, who were taken charge of by caretaker pair Lee Baldwin and Hallett, were awarded a penalty on 25 minutes.

Hutchings was hauled down after rounding Common goalkeeper Matthew Crutwell with a spot-kick awarded.

Wick winger Hutchings saw his effort saved as it was scoreless at the interval.

Hutchings made up for that miss on the hour as he thundered home after Andy Chick’s cross picked him out.

Chick turned provider once again ten minutes later as his corner was headed home by Playle-Howard.

Wick were forced to see out the final 15 minutes with a man less as Bingham was shown a second yellow card for a foul.

But Wick’s backline stood firm as they progressed in the FA Vase.
