Wick get fourth successive win
WICK Football Club won for the fourth successive game on Saturday with a 5-3 victory over Ringmer in County League Division 1.
The win saw them move level on 16 points with their opponents, and continue their winning run and Wick boss Gary Block said: “Who’d have thought it a month ago?
“If I was being critical, we should have scored more, but I’m obviously happy with the three points.”
Wick were deserved winners of this bottom-of-the-table tussle, with George Gaskin, Rob Wimble and Michael Asare impressive all game.
They ran the Ringmer back line ragged and Wick should have been two up within five minutes as both Gaskin and Asare shot wide with only the keeper to beat.
The deadlock was finally broken on the half-hour when a quick free kick on the halfway line from Asare found Gaskin in acres of space and bearing down on goal and he rounded the keeper with ease to score.
As so often happens, the visitors struck back immediately when Darren Lok went clean through only to be checked by Wick keeper Maciek Kason, in for the injured Gregg Forster, and Marc Whiteman duly converted the resulting penalty.
Gaskin got on the scoresheet again in the 41st minute with a clever header from the edge of the box that surprised everyone, most importantly Gary Trott in the Ringmer goal, as it snuck into the bottom corner.
Asare then added another a minute before the break, having latched onto a Wimble flick and he smashed home from just inside the area.
The game was pretty much sealed a minute into the second half when a dreadful clearance from Trott gifted Gaskin his hat-trick and when, with quarter of an hour to play, Asare was given the freedom of the Ringmer box, Wick were 5-1 up with another emphatic finish.
That was not the end of the scoring, though, as referee Nigel Baker awarded a harsh penalty against George Hotson for handball when the player had no way of avoiding the ball. Whiteman did the honours, and nerves were jangling even more when Aaron Hasson smashed the ball into the top corner with three minutes left to play.
Wick composed themselves for the remainder of the game and Ringmer should have been reduced to 10 men after an awful two-footed challenge on Andy Brown by Jayson Sowter, but neither referee or linesman could pick out the player that committed the offence, having been distracted by another minor scuffle.
On this form, Wick will not be looking over their shoulders for much longer, as they rise up the table.
