SUBSTITUTE David Murray was Clymping Football Club's extra-time hero with the winner against West Sussex League Premier Division rivals Newtown Villa.
With both sets of players tiring in the Bank Holiday Monday sun, Murray collected the ball just after the break in extra-time and sent forward a speculative lob. It sailed over keeper Warren Pye into the net, much to the joy of the sizeable Clymping crowd who had gathered at Arundel's Mill Road.

The impressive Seb Di Paola nearly handed Newtown a late lifeline. But Marc Cooper's free kick from his foul missed three Villa players in the box and curled just wide of the far post.

An equaliser would have been harsh on Clymping, who more than deserved to regain the trophy they last won in 2004.

Clymping player-manager Dominic Di Paola said: "It's about time we beat them. I'm really pleased for everyone, especially as the Reserves won their cup final as well. It was a very good day for the club."

Clymping had lost both league games to Newtown, and the Centenary Cup final, so were determined to take revenge and, after a slow start, dominated the second half.

After going a goal down to a 28th-minute strike from Ryan Saigemen, Clymping levelled on 54 minutes. Jamie Cole's corner found Steve Webb, whose deflected shot from the edge of the area found its way past Pye.

Webb nearly put Clymping ahead on 66 minutes. But his towering header looped narrowly wide, following an excellent cross from substitute Dominic Di Paola. Three minutes later, Webb somehow scooped the ball over from three yards, following another fine Di Paola cross.

Extra-time should have been avoided in the closing stages of normal time, but Murray and then Joe Shelley wasted good opportunities.

Newtown had set the tempo and created the better openings. in the first half.

Tom Stairs' shot on five minutes was well saved by Clymping keeper Michael Oakley, and Cooper's free kick on the half-hour flew over.

Ex-Littlehampton striker Jonas Templeman then could have doubled their lead just before half-time.

Clymping's best chances in the first half fell to Tony Castro, who twice missed the target.

On Saturday, Clymping finished their league season with a 2-0 win at Wittering, with goals from Joe Shelley and Sonny Banks.

Clymping will finish second, behind Newtown, and be promoted into the County League if Barnham, six points behind, fail to win their final two matches, and they do not overturn Clymping's nine-goal superior goal difference.

Di Paola said: "We're pretty-much ready to go up, so fingers crossed results go our way."

CLYMPING: Oakley; Raynsford, S.Di Paola, Young, Footman; S.Webb, Castro, Brown, Cole; Banks, Shelley. Subs: D.Di Paola (Footman 54), Murray (Cole 67), Browne (Raynsford 104).

  • CLYMPING Reserves struck three extra-time goals to win the West Sussex League Chichester Charity Cup 4-1 against Ashington Rovers at Arundel on Bank Holiday Monday.

Ashington went ahead after 10 minutes, but Clymping's player-manager Tony Gallagher equalised 12 minutes later.

Both sides had chances to win in normal time, and Clymping keeper Ian Campbell made some excellent saves.

Rob Hall chipped Ashington's keeper in the fourth minute of extra-time to put Clymping ahead, and they sealed their win with goals from Hall, again, and Danny Hand.

Right-back Steve Gallagher was outstanding for Clymping.

Clymping had won Division 2 South, while Ashington lifted the Division 2 North title. Both sides lost just one league game, and they will now face each other in Division 1 next season.
