Cricket round-up
AUSTRALIAN Angus Webster, Littlehampton's new overseas player, was one of four players to hit a half-century for the club in their Sussex League draw at Worthing on Saturday.
Webster struck 59 from just 76 balls, with seven fours and one six, in Littlehampton's total of 236-5. Opener Chris Green, skipper Benn Challen and James Askew also reached 50.
In Worthing's reply, Littlehampton dropped captain Dominic Clapp for 10, and later Luke Vinter, on his return to Littlehampton from Brighton & Hove, had his club captain last season caught off a no-ball for 20, before he was one of Challen's two victims when on 37.
Vinter also took three wickets, all in his second spell.
Challen said: "I'd have liked to have won the toss and put them in. But that stuck us in and we put a good score on the board.
"It was a decent wicket and was hard to get people out on.
"We batted and bowled well, and Angus Webster, who's still getting used to the slowness of the wickets here, batted well."
On Sunday, Littlehampton reached the second round of the Cockspur Cup with an in-the-end convincing win over Roffey.
Littlehampton had fallen to 146-7 before an unbeaten 95-run stand between Graham Blann and Vinter took them to 241-7 from their 45 overs.
Blann smashed 123 not out, with 14 fours and three sixes, and Vinter hit a personal-best unbeaten 61 with six fours and three sixes. His highest score previously was 15 not out for Littlehampton four years ago.
Roffey were then skittled out for 82, with three wickets for Ryan Wadey, and two each for Adam Tester, Vinter and Matt Parnell.
Littlehampton host Brighton & Hove in the next round on May 18.
Wicketkeeper and opening batsman, Chris Kirkham, is back available for Littlehampton at home to St James on Saturday.
Arundel's Sussex League debut, in Division 3 West, ended in a disappointing six-wicket defeat at home to Slinfold.
Richard James (33), Bradley James (34) and Aussie Seb Gallagher (29) all made useful contributions at the start of Arundel's innings but they fell to 148 all out.
Bradley James shared 49-run partnerships with both Richard James, and Gallagher.
But Slinfold cruised to their target inside 30 overs.
Darryl Rebbetts took a hat-trick for East Preston in their draw with Ports-lade in Invitation League Division 1.
He had Alex Smith (26) caught at short third man by Joel Kingsbury, bowled former Rustington skipper Jamie Howick (68), then snapped David Wainwright's middle stump in two.
Portslade finished on 224-6, with Rebbetts taking 4-57, before EP (160-9) recovered from 13-4 to see out the last two overs for the draw.
Tom Reeves' 37 was their top score.
EP captain Andy Reeves said: "Everyone bowled well and we've got more kids in the team this year, so were a lot more energetic in the field than normal.
"A couple of half-chances went down, but I was quite pleased with our fielding.
"Darryl got a hat-trick and bowled really well, and so too did Jack Sunderland.
"It wasn't looking too good in our reply when we were 13-4 off 10 overs but Tom Reeves (37) and Gary Weedon (28) batted well and looked comfortable.
"I was always confident that we wouldn't lose because even Tom Chamberlain, our No 11, has scored hundreds in Under-14 cricket.
"We just want to enjoy the season, and finishing mid-table would be nice."
Also in Division 1, another Aussie starred on his debut. Clymping's right-arm medium-fast all-rounder Andrew Danson took 6-41 to help dismiss Selsey, chasing 205, out for only 86.
In Clymping's total, Karl Pierce smashed 85, with 11 fours and three sixes, and shared a 109-run stand with Andy Hancock (31). Captain Gareth Challen, with five fours and two sixes, had earlier hit 50.
Gareth Challen said: "We got off to a fairly good start at 63-1, but then had a little collapse and were 72-5.
"Andy Hancock and Karl Pierce batted well, but we then had another collapse at the end and lost three wickets without getting a run.
"Andrew Danson got a lot of bounce and four of his six wickets were bowled. It was the first time he had bowled in England as well."
In Division 2, Rustington lost by six wickets at new Invitation League side West Chiltington & Thakeham.
They finished fourth in the West Sussex League last season, but bowled Rustington out for just 79, and reached their target inside 22 overs.
