ANGMERING Sports College's Dan Dunscombe jumped to third place in the English Schools Athletics Championships in Gateshead on Saturday.
He finished joint third in the Senior Boys high jump with Buckinghamshire's Cameron Lake after both cleared 1.93m, but admitted he was slightly disappointed not to have jumped higher.

He said: "I was delighted with the medal, but I'd have liked to have jumped higher.

"Everyone in the competition was below their best. It was cold and wet conditions, and our event was 4pm so we were sitting around all day, so I don't know if that affected everyone. But I'd have liked to have jumped around two metres."

Littlehampton-based Dunscombe, who was 18 in February, is 6ft 8in and has a personal best of 2.03m.

As for the rest of the year, Worthing Harrier Dunscombe hopes to be selected for the Inter Counties Under-20 Championships, and for the Junior Commonwealth Championships in India in September, where the qualifying height is 2.08m.

Bedfordshire's Scott Johnson won the competition with a jump of 2.05m, and Norfolk's Chris Baker was second with 2.02m.

Kayley Alcorn finished seventh in the Senior Girls triple jump with 11.09m. Berkshire's Shakira Wright won with a jump of 12.76m.

Angmering's third participant in the Championships, Rhys Francis, did not qualify for the shot putt final.
