A 20-year-old Littlehampton woman who suffered multiple stab wounds after being attacked by a man in the town's Somerfield supermarket remains in a "serious" condition in hospital today (Wednesday, September 17).
The victim, a customer at the Anchor Springs store, had emergency surgery overnight and was transferred to a hospital in Southampton.

She was attacked shortly after 4pm in front of shocked customers, who pulled a man with a knife away from her as she lay bleeding heavily in an aisle.

Several members of Littlehampton's Shopwatch Radio scheme answered an emergency call from the supermarket and helped to give first aid to the young woman and to detain her attacker, before the police and ambulance crews arrived.

The supermarket remained closed this morning while police forensic officers continued their investigations.

A man, in his early 20s, from Bognor was arrested shortly after the incident and remained in police custody this morning.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 0845 60 70 999, quoting Operation Pentney.
