FRIENDS of a 20-year-old woman who was stabbed in a Littlehampton supermarket threw insults at the man accused of her attempted murder.
Samuel Reid-Wentworth, 21, of Longford Road, Bognor, appeared at Worthing Magistrates' Court this morning (Thursday, September 18), accused of stabbing 20-year-old Lucy Yates "approximately 17 times".
The defendant spoke only to confirm his name and address and did not enter a plea.
Lucy was stabbed in front of horrified shoppers at around 4.20pm in Somerfield, Anchor Springs, on Tuesday, September 16.
Her friends and family were in court, and screamed "burn in hell", and "evil" as Reid-Wentworth was led from the dock.
Peter Lytle, prosecuting, told the court Reid-Wentworth had a history of schizophrenia.
Steve Collett, defending, did not enter a bail application on behalf of his client.
Lucy is currently recovering in Southampton Hospital, where she is said to be in a stable, but critical condition.
A friend of hers, who asked not to be named, said it was a horrific thing to have happened.
"She is doing OK," she added.
Chairman of the bench, magistrate Lorna Miliffe, told Reid-Wentworth he would be remanded in custody until his next appearance at Lewes Crown Court on September 29.
