Search for local input about WWII’s top secret 30 Assault Unit

I hope readers may be able to help our research for a local history research project regarding 30 Assault Unit, at the Littlehampton Look and Sea Centre.

As part of our research, we would like to speak to locals who may have a story to share.

Our project concerns the top secret Royal Marines Commando unit ‘30 Assault Unit’ that was based in Littlehampton during the Second World War and operated ahead of advancing forces to capture enemy intelligence.

The unit occupied buildings, trained in the area such as river crossings on the River Arun, and townspeople provided accommodation.

In overall command of the unit was the author of the James Bond novels, Commander Ian Fleming.

Some members of 30 Assault Unit even stayed in Littlehampton after the war and made it their home.

We are trying to reach out to members of the public that may know about the activities of 30 Assault Unit during the war or may even be a relative, and possibly hold some historical artifacts.

We hope to put together a display documenting what locations were used by 30 Assault Unit and its impact on the town.
