Mystery plant pokes through in Southwick

Shirley Paver is looking for help identifying this unsual flower head, which has appeared in her garden below. Can you help?

It was growing from the middle of a pink hydrangea plant but the flower head was completely different to the other blooms.

As you can see the flower head was made up of many small flowers and looked similar to an agapanthus, but the petals were dark red/burgundy in colour and was very pretty.

The seed pods from an agapanthus are bean shaped whereas these, as you can see are round, more apple shaped.

While it was growing, the green stalk came directly out of the ground among the hydrangea stems and had no separate leaves.

My friend and I would really appreciate it if someone could identify it for us and advise us why it should be growing from the middle of a hydrangea.
