The issue over SATs is surely whether or not testing children will cause them to learn more.
In particular, will it cause fewer children to be left behind and increase our standing in the world education tables.
It seems bizarre of the government to think that by increasing the amount we expect children to know, and consequently making tests harder, we can help children who already find it hard to keep up.
Perhaps their idea is that the more knowledge they try to pound into childrens’ heads, the more will stick?
As to how testing seven- year-olds will increase our world education ranking, I am reminded of the person who pointed out that trying to increase knowledge by testing is like trying to make yourself taller by measuring your height.
