Runners set a hot pace in Arundel 10k

HUNDREDS of runners took to their marks as the starting pistol went off, launching this year’s Arundel 10k race.

Glorious weather enticed more than 400 people to take part in competition which is a major fund-raiser for the 1st Arundel Scout Group.

Stephen McLoughlin, of Tone Zone Runners, narrowly missed out on last year’s top spot. However, a valiant and determined effort secured him first place in a time of 37min 18sec.

Second place in the men’s field went to Darryl Webb, of Burgess Hill Runners, who came in just seconds behind Stephen, in a time of 37min 54sec.

Tom Frost, of Liss Runners, earned himself the bronze, with a respectable time of 39min 04sec.

Men’s results: Men overall and U40 – Stephen McLoughlin (Tone Zone Runners), 37min 18sec, Men Veterans (over-70) – 1, Anthony Boxall (Fittleworth Flyers), 50min 37sec; 2, David Peters (Vets AC), 59min 51sec; 3, Roger Locke (Lancing Eagles), 60min 45sec.

As in previous years the women’s category proved fiercely competitive, with Angela Carpenter, of Chichester Runners, romping to a comfortable win in a time of 41min 14sec.

Runner-up Carly Webster couldn’t keep up with Carpenter’s blistering pace, and crossed the line in 44min 17sec, followed by Linda Tombs and Jenny Hall.

Winners in the ladies’ categories: Ladies’ overall –Angela Carpenter (Chichester Runners), 41min 14sec; 2, Carly Webster, 44min 17sec; 3, Linda Tombs (Fittleworth Flyers), 44min 56sec.

Ladies’ Veterans (over 55) – 1, Linda Tombs (Fittleworth Flyers), 44min 56sec; 2, Cora Gillies (55min 15sec); 3, Sue Baker (Chichester Runners) 57min 48sec.

The team event proved as popular as ever, with Del Wallace, Michael Caffyn, Nick Casburn and Thomas Caffyn from Arunners the first men home in a cumulative time of 02:45:30.

In the women’s team race, Tone Zone Runners proved dominant with Anne Kari Enes, Louise Proctor, Karen Harrison and Joan Woolley crossing the line in 03:22:39.
