A PLEA from Worthing Hospital for an unusual educational tool is being met by enthusiastic knitters.
The hospital’s maternity unit needs a new batch of knitted boobs, which are used to help inform expectant and new mums about breastfeeding.
Caroline Wilbor, who owns The Wool Bar in Warwick Street, Worthing, is encouraging her customers to knit a pair of woollen boobs for the unit.
She said: “Knitted boobs are always a talking point – but they are quite straightforward to make, so whether you are a beginner or advanced at knitted you should have a go.”
Last year, Caroline donated a basket full of boobs to the hospital, and is hoping between 35 to 50 will be knitted this year.
She added: “We got all shapes, sizes and colours. It’s a little bit different – they are fun to make as it is a nice small, manageable project and they really put a smile on people’s faces.”
Carole Garrick, head of midwifery at Worthing Hospital, said: “We use knitted breasts to teach women how to hand-express. It is much nicer for them, less intrusive and less invasive, to be shown how to do it in this way rather than being shown on their own breasts.
“They are extremely useful to us, but more importantly they are appreciated by our mums, and so we are very grateful to anyone who can supply them.”
