“But it’s important to understand that this sort of terrorist attack will not weaken our resolve, in fact it strengthens it.

“And Sussex Police are working really hard to keep us all safe and to ensure that our own officers and staff are safe as well.”

Paying tribute to PC Keith Palmer, who was killed by a man who also drove into a crowd outside Parliament, killing at least three others, Mrs Bourne said: “I think for all of us it’s to spare a moment today to think of those that have been affected, to cherish the memories of those who have lost their lives and to offer our support to families and friends of the victims of this.

“But also to thank the emergency services, certainly they plan they prepare, they train for events like this and it’s testament to their professionalism that we’ve seen how that’s displayed.

“It’s terribly tragic what’s happened in London but I think for Sussex people, it’s rest assured that Sussex Police is keeping you safe.
