WEST Sussex County Council has published the results of its Age with Confidence survey this week.
The survey found eight out of 10 people believed keeping their mind and body active would ensure a healthier life in old age.
Nine out of 10 people said ageing with confidence was as much about keeping a positive attitude and more than three quarters – 77 per cent – said planning for a more financially secure and healthy future was “very important”.
However, the survey also revealed people’s concerns with more than a third said they were worried about memory loss and dementia and a quarter worried about physical health problems.
The survey ran from October last year to January.
It received 1,060 responses.
Seven out of 10 people claimed they felt younger than their actual age, while a quarter looked forward to the extra free time they would have when they retired.
Almost a quarter of respondents suggested more people should be encouraged to take up physical or mental activities through well-being hubs.
A tenth called for more advice and support for independent living, including stairlifts, and a greater range of community services to help older people remain in their own homes.
