CONCERNS over potentially dangerous gust along the coast have forced organisers to cancel Littlehampton’s Bonfire Night celebrations this evening (Saturday, October 26).
As gale-force winds inch closer to the south-east, bonfire organisers took the decision to call-off this year’s event.
Alan Alderton, chairman of the Littlehampton Bonfire Society, said he was bitterly disappointed at the decision but explained that the strong winds could have jeopardized spectators watching the event.
The move saw the children’s parade, grand torchlight procession, bonfire lighting and fireworks display being cancelled.
However, members of the society and those of the Portsmouth City Band, did brave the windy conditions to take part in the traditional memorial service, at the Beach Road war memorial.
Mr Alderton said it looked unlikely that this year’s bonfire would be rearranged.
