PLANS to ‘downgrade’ Littlehampton’s Crown Post Office by moving it into an opticians will negatively affect traders and worsen the quality of service, campaigners have said.
The Post Office this week announced it was planning to close its Crown branch in The Arcade and move it to 66 High Street – the site presently occupied by Stead & Simpson.
Under the plans, Littlehampton would lose its Crown Post Office status and would instead be run within an opticians by Yogi Eyecare Ltd.
The new post office would have the half the number of counters, down to three from six currently, and would be opened in February next year.
The company said the same range of products and services would continue to be provided should the move go ahead.
However, Mike Northeast, Labour councillor for the Ham ward, said the decision would worsen the service.
He said: “There’s no doubt it will be downgraded. When they move to franchises there’s been no post office that has kept all of its services.”
