POLICE are today (Thursday, October 10) appealing for help following the assault of five off-duty Royal Marines in Littlehampton over the weekend.
The marines, aged between 20 and 35, were in Church Street, walking back to their accommodation having just left the Coco Lounge, in Clifton Road, when they were assaulted by a number of men, between 2.20am and 2.40am on Saturday, October 5.
The soldiers were part of 30 Commando IX who earlier that day had received the freedom of Littlehampton and marched through the town.
The five marines were treated at Worthing Hospital for various facial injuries including one broken nose, bruising and cuts, and were discharged the same night.
A 20-year-old man from Angmering was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm and 22-year-old man from Littlehampton was arrested on suspicion of affray.
They were questioned and released on police bail until Friday, November 8, while enquiries continue.
