The service will offer the companionship of a qualified support assistant in the home to veterans and partners who are less mobile, giving carers a needed break.

The friendly visit for up to five hours at a time involves activities, light snacks, and help with needs.

The service is available to those living 10 to 15 miles from Rustington.

Shirley Steeples RN, General Manager of Princess Marina House, said: “Our recently launched Veterans Lunch Club has been enormously popular; the veterans really like coming out for a nice meal and good natter.

“But we know there are many RAF veterans and partners in the surrounding community who are less mobile and unable to attend.

“Our new Respite at Home service will help them by providing the companionship of a qualified support assistant in the home and give carers – often partners or adult children – peace of mind and a needed break.”

While the charity is asking for a £5 contribution per hour, the service can be provided at a reduced rate or free of charge in cases of financial hardship.

Ms Steeples added: “Isolation for the elderly and strain on carers is a real problem that can take a huge emotional toll.

“We hope that our new service brightens the lives of both our elderly veterans or partners, and their carers.”
