When it comes to nailing the sales, it’s all about the leg (or finger scroll) work.

Katherine Ormerod thinks so, so long as you prepare properly. For example, it’s important you set yourself a realistic budget in advance, write it down, and stick to it. Shopping feels a lot less guilty if you know how much you can actually afford to spend. This will also keep you focused; if you can’t afford it, don’t buy it.

Timing is also extremely important, especially as buying online means you aren’t restricted to UK outlets. Lyst.co.uk, which aggregates the inventories of thousands of online boutiques, brands, and department stores from all over the world, sees a 200% increase in traffic between midnight and 1am on Black Friday.

In New York, shoppers go online at midnight to claim the first bargains. In LA 7am is the most popular time to shop. Whilst, in the UK most people wait until lunchtime, meaning many items may have already sold out. Even then, there’s still a risk you’ll have your head turned by something you would never normally consider buying, rather than shopping your actual life.

So if you’re going online this year what do you need to do to make sure you beat the cyber-crowds and get the best deals? Which fashion items should you have your eye on and what can you do in advance to prepare for the big day?
