Littlehampton coastguard was called out yesterday to reports of suspected ordnance on the beach.
The coastguard responded to reports of ordnance near East Preston, but upon arrival confirmed it was a trawler bobbin.
A spokesperson for HM Coastguard Littlehampton said: “Item was removed to the top of the beach for disposal and to prevent further calls.
“If you see something suspicious on the beach dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
Ordnance and shells from World Ward 2 is often found on beaches on the south coast of England.
