LITTLEHAMPTON’s long-promised hospital has today been refused by NHS executives.
At a press briefing held at the Arun Civic Centre, in Maltravers Road, today (Tuesday, March 20) Steve Pollock, interim managing director for Coastal West Sussex Federation, said a recommendation would be made to the NHS Sussex Board, at its meeting next week, not to proceed with plans for the facility that has been promised since 2005.
Arun District Council’s leader councillor Gillian Brown has criticised the move claiming it is a “betrayal” to all the residents of Littlehampton.
She said: “Once again the townspeople of Littlehampton have been snubbed and promises broken by the NHS.
“They are ignoring the needs of Littlehampton and the direct pleas of more than 8,000 people who have called on them to deliver the promise they made back in 2005 by supporting this latest campaign to build a new hospital on the site in Fitzalan Road.
“Our residents are being treated like the second class citizens of Sussex when it comes to health care provision and that is not good enough.”
Littlehampton town mayor, Alan Gammon, showed his dismay during today’s press briefing, adding that this was, “quite simply the wrong decision”.
