More than £2m of taxpayers’ money has been saved by extra recycling by West Sussex residents in four months.

Between July and August, the total material processed and diverted from landfill was 12,877.50 tonnes, which resulted in a saving of more than £1m on landfill tax (at £82.60 per tonne).

This is added to the £1.4m saved on landfill tax between April and June, and this money can now be reinvested according to West Sussex County Council.

David Barling, WSCC’s cabinet member for residents’ services, said: “We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who continues to recycle and hope they will strive to help us maintain this excellent progress.

“Recycling is of such importance and something we can all do to take pride in where we live. Not only is it a huge benefit for the entire county, it will have a positive impact on future generations for years to come.”

Since April, when pots, tubs and trays could first be included in recycling bins, the total amount of plastics recycled has risen each month.

Of the items recycled between July and August, plastics made up 9.1 per cent. The amount of plastic bottles alone weighed in at 762.76 tonnes, higher than the previous months’ figure.

As the autumn months bring wetter weather residents are asked to keep their recyclable items dry, clean and loose.

Soggy paper and card can clog the sorting machinery and stick to other items.
