When crows attack
PEOPLE living in a quiet Rustington street are having to take extreme measures to protect their cars from a black-clad raider.
A fearless crow, with an apparent penchant for rubber, has been attacking cars in Knightscroft Avenue for the past week.
It has damaged wiper blades, cracked two windscreens and even pecked away at rubber seals of double glazing on the houses.
Now residents are defending their cars by wrapping windscreen wipers up in plastic bags, bin liners, sheeting, towels and cardboard tubes in a bid to curb the crow's pecking.
Sue Pyle said: "I have had to fork out 50 excess for a new windscreen replacement, as the crow pecked so hard it made a crack. The neighbour across the road also now has a crack on the windscreen.
"What with that and the cost of the replacement wipers for both of our cars, this crow's strange habits are getting beyond a joke!"
Next-door neighbour Alan Ireland said he wasn't sure what should be done if the bird continued its damaging raids.
"It's done quite a lot of damage, but I wouldn't necessarily like to see it come to harm. I heard it the other day tapping at a windscreen, and making a real din."
Sue, a member of the RSPB, asked the charity if it could explain the attacks, and was told the crow's behaviour was not uncommon — it could be seeing its own reflection in the glass, and, thinking the image was an enemy, attacking it. One solution is to put cling film on the windscreen, to eliminate the reflection.
