VOTE: Grove Lodge traffic lights: On or off?
SWITCHING off the traffic lights at the Grove Lodge roundabout would ease congestion – according to the Highways Agency.
At a public exhibition held in Broadwater on Friday, May 1, to review the A27, the Highways Agency revealed traffic flow at the notorious Grove Lodge roundabout could be speeded up in the evenings if the lights were switched off.
But agency representatives believed this would just shift the problem to other Worthing roads.
Waiting times
Martin Wright, of the Highways Agency, said: "If we were to switch off the traffic lights during peak hours at night, which is what some members of the public have said they would like to happen, it would cut the wait time by about eight minutes.
"But this would have a detrimental effect on traffic trying to use other roads, including the A24.
"And if there were no traffic signals there at all, this would make things not so comfortable for pedestrians."
Instead, the sequencing of the traffic lights will be changed within the next year to see if this has a positive impact on traffic problems.
Traffic flow
The exhibition, held at the Charmandean Centre, was in response to a review on the impact the lights have on traffic flow along the A27, which the agency has been working on since June last year.
Len Crowhurst, a member of Worthing Residents' Association, said: "Most people have to use the roundabout to get in and out of the town.
"Since the traffic lights were installed at Grove Lodge, things are better, but this is only when they lights are working, as they are unreliable.
"But there are now more problems at the cemetery roundabout as the traffic builds up.
"Signage needs to be improved at Grove Lodge also, as people who do not know the area often get in the wrong lane."
Daily queues
Leslie Morton, of Third Avenue, Broadwater, said: "This is going to cost a lot of money, but what is really needed is a bypass. There are daily queues in traffic which stretch back to Lancing."
Other changes the Highways Agency is considering making to the area include improving the layout and making changes to the A27 near Lyons Farm.
Mr Wright added: "We want to try to benefit as many people as possible and this means trying to strike a compromise. We will keep the area under review and see if we can make more improvements.
"We want to reassure the public we won't stop thinking about it and we will continue to do reviews.
"Each time, we will come back and let people know what we are doing."
