DOZENS of firefighters have been tackling a deliberate fire which has completely destroyed a Worthing café.
A taxi driver alerted the fire service to the blaze at the caf, which is located within Beach House Park, Lyndhurst Road, just after 9.30pm last night (Sunday, October 18).
Four fire crews from Worthing and one from Lancing were called to the scene.
Worthing watch commander Darren Wickings said: "We could see the flames from Broadwater Bridge. The flames must have been 30 to 40ft high.
"When we arrived at the park, the cafe was engulfed in fire and we had to ask for back-up.
"We spent about three hours fighting the fire, but we fought it externally as it was too dangerous to send our firefighters inside."
The caf has been completely destroyed.
Fire service investigators and the police were still at the park today (Monday, October 19) to find the cause of the fire. It is believed it was started deliberately.
