Sure Start will rise from the chapel rubble

LITTLEHAMPTON'S Wick-bourne Chapel was reduced to a pile of rubble and dust this week, to make way for a £1m-plus family and community centre.

The chapel, built just 45 years ago, is being replaced with new, purpose-built premises for Littlehampton Sure Start, the organisation launched two years ago to co-ordinate health, education and other services for young children.

The centre will have a community hall, nursery, creche, training and counselling rooms, parents' room and internet caf. It will also provide a base for Arun Community Church, which owned the chapel, and the WIRE Project will have offices there, too.

It's hoped that the first phase of the new building, at Clun Road, will be completed in time for the October opening of the nursery, run by Arun Community Church and funded by the county council.

The remainder is set to be handed over to Sure Start by Christmas, in time to be fully operational from mid-Jaunary.
