Pub’s funraisers stuns Chestnut Tree House

IT IS a pub run by the locals, for the locals.

And this month the charitable staff at The George, in Main Street, Burpham, have celebrated raising an impressive sum of cash – £2,180.81 to be precise – for their local children’s hospice, Chestnut Tree House.

The pub, which was bought by a group of residents in 2013, generously gave a cover charge per booking as well as organising a successful charity dinner for the Poling-based hospice.

David King, chairman of the Burpham and Warningcamp Pub Company, said: “When local residents bought The George the intention was to put the pub at the heart of the local community. Supporting a local charity was one way to do that and Chestnut Tree House was chosen for its local connections and the wonderful work it does for children.”

Mr King thanked all the pub’s customers who backed the fundraising quest, as well as pub manager Martin Bear and his team for helping to organise it.

The charity dinner’s full ticket price, of £12.50 per person, was donated to Chestnut Tree House and the raffle and auction attracted plenty of attention with its prizes of a magnum of Champagne, sports top worn by an Olympian and signed rugby shirt.

Caroline Roberts-Quigley, Chestnut Tree House fundraiser, said the event was ‘incredibly successful’ and that the money raised would make a ‘huge difference to life-limited children in Sussex’.

“This substantial amount will actually give a child a three-night break at Chestnut Tree House, where they will receive specialist care and symptom management from our nursing team,” she said. “They can enjoy the hydrotherapy pool, relax in the multi-sensory room and join in with lots of activities, whilst mum and dad get the chance to ‘recharge their batteries’.”
