FIREFIGHTERS were called to a blaze in a derelict building in Toddington as their colleagues locally and nationally were on strike.

Retained crew and non-striking firefighters were called to a fire at a building in Toddington Lane, Toddington, at around 3pm this afternoon (Friday, May 2).

They are still at the scene, though the fire has now been put out.

Firefighters from Littlehampton and Worthing stations were called to the fire, which was put out with two hose reels, three jets and a hydrant.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Firefighters from the Fire Brigades Union have been striking around the country today between noon and 5pm over a long-standing row about their pensions. They are also striking tomorrow between 2pm and 2am and on Sunday between 10am and 3pm.
