A FAMILIAR face on Littlehampton beach for the last 15 years will be missed by holidaymakers this summer.

John Batley, deckchair concessionaire, has taken the decision to step down and pass on the deckchair baton to someone new.

Arun District Council presented him with a gift in recognition of his service.

Chairman Andy Cooper thanked him for his hard work and long service before presenting him with a picture of the deckchairs on Littlehampton beach as a symbol of the council’s gratitude.

The concession contract is currently under negotiation with a new operator and the council said the usual high standard of service would be continued.

Mr Cooper said “Mr Batley has served both local residents and all our visitors tirelessly for 15 years, come rain or shine. It is an honour to be able to thank John and present him with a token of our gratitude.

“We are hoping the summer ahead will be sunny and warm and that the new concessionaire will have a busy and successful season.”

East Beach is popular during the summer months, when deckchairs are available to hire at various spots.
