New activities have been introduced at East Preston Library.

The weekly knit and natter group, launched about a month ago, is running successfully on Wednesdays, 2pm to 3.30pm. It is a free, drop-in session.

Community librarian Lyndsey Power said: “This friendly group come to the library, sit with their knitting and chat over tea and coffee.

“It’s not just knitting, though. We have sewing, crochet and needlework, to name a few. You don’t need to be an expert either, all abilities are welcome.

“The library also has a cosy children’s area where children and grandchildren can find books while their parents and carers enjoy the group.”

For those who are struggling to get to grips with their laptop or PC, the library has a volunteer computer buddy available on Wednesdays, 2pm to 4pm, for free support on a drop-in basis.

Lyndsey added: “There are library PCs which you can use, or you can bring in your own laptop. From help with Word to learning how to use Google, no question is too small.”

The library, in The Street, East Preston, was visited more than 24,000 times last year and the staff answered almost 300 enquiries from customers and residents.

The library was involved with the Christmas celebrations in the village, holding a Scalextric championship and lantern making for children.

It is also taking part in the summer festival, which will be themed around children’s book characters.

Lyndey said: “The library has two very passionate members of staff who know most of the customers by name.

“They are supported by a team of dedicated volunteers who take books to housebound people, join children to the Summer Reading Challenge and support the weekly Toddler Time sessions.

The library is open Monday to Wednesday 1pm to 5pm, Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 2pm.
