Fine effort from Littlehampton Academy

I was delighted to read the extensive coverage last week to the good news that The Littlehampton Academy has shaken off the millstone of special measures.

Getting a school out of special measures is like dragging a stricken ship off rocks. The new, improved rating of ‘needs improvement’ makes it clear that there are still hazards ahead. But much to praise was found at an inspection in March by the school watchdog Ofsted, such as high staff morale, consistently good teaching and a restoration of parents’ confidence. Pupils were polite, sensibly behaved and felt safe and secure. The sixth form was rated good and its students described as ‘role models’.

Only three months earlier, the academy was warned by Ofsted that it was failing to make the progress required. Clearly, since then, the transformation has been remarkable.

New measures, and many other changes introduced over a tempestuous 12 months, have started to bite thanks to the hard work of staff and the efforts of a revitalised senior management team.

Ofsted suggests that TLA, with a newly appointed captain on the bridge, has the capacity to move forward rapidly. And with the well-being of the academy’s 1,500 pupil ‘passengers’ at stake the community should do all it can to help the school ride out the storm and reach the relatively tranquil waters of a good rating.

Read the Ofsted report on the TLA website under the ‘our academy’ drop-down menu.
