A GOLDEN Years photo of a Lancing hairdresser has revealed the story of an engineer who gained local fame.
Earlier this year, we asked who the hairdresser was.
The Rev. Philip Tout, the chairman of Pastfinders, the Lancing and Sompting local history group, said the man was Ron Hanreck.
He said Ron came to Lancing in the late 1950s, lived in North Farm Road, and had a barber shop in Lincoln Court, South Street, next to Weston’s newspaper and sweet shop.
Ron later moved to North Road and had a shop near the NatWest bank, and died within the last five years, said Philip.
But it was the background of the photo that reminded Philip of a different story which appeared in the Herald.
“The background of the photograph is interesting with the advertisement for Dennis Keen. He was a radio and television engineer who moved to Lancing around 1950 and had a shop in Crabtree Lane, a few doors down from Grand Avenue.
“He was featured on the front page of the Worthing Herald for his experiment in mobile TV.
“He put an aerial on the top of his Jowett Javelin car, and a television on a passenger seat, and managed to get a TV signal whilst driving along the A27 Sompting bypass,” said Philip.
